17 (A)Better is a dry morsel with quiet
    than a house full of feasting[a] with strife.
A servant who deals wisely will rule over (B)a son who acts shamefully
    and (C)will share the inheritance as one of the brothers.
(D)The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
    (E)and the Lord tests hearts.
An evildoer listens to wicked lips,
    and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
Whoever mocks the poor (F)insults his Maker;
    he who is (G)glad at calamity will not go (H)unpunished.
(I)Grandchildren are (J)the crown of the aged,
    and the glory of children is their fathers.
Fine speech is not (K)becoming to a fool;
    still less is (L)false speech to a prince.
(M)A bribe is like a magic[b] stone in the eyes of the one who gives it;
    wherever he turns he prospers.
Whoever (N)covers an offense seeks love,
    but he who repeats a matter (O)separates close friends.
10 A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding
    than a hundred blows into a fool.
11 An evil man seeks only rebellion,
    and (P)a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
12 Let a man meet (Q)a she-bear robbed of her cubs
    (R)rather than a fool in his folly.
13 If anyone (S)returns evil for good,
    (T)evil will not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is like letting out water,
    so (U)quit before the quarrel breaks out.
15 He who (V)justifies the wicked and he who (W)condemns the righteous
    are both alike an abomination to the Lord.
16 Why should a fool have money in his hand (X)to buy wisdom
    when he has no sense?
17 (Y)A friend loves at all times,
    and a brother is born for adversity.
18 One who lacks sense gives a pledge
    and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor.
19 Whoever loves transgression loves strife;
    he who (Z)makes his door high seeks destruction.
20 (AA)A man of crooked heart does not discover good,
    and one with a dishonest tongue falls into calamity.
21 He who (AB)sires a fool gets himself sorrow,
    and the father of a fool has no joy.
22 (AC)A joyful heart is good medicine,
    but a crushed spirit (AD)dries up the bones.
23 The wicked accepts (AE)a bribe in secret[c]
    to (AF)pervert the ways of justice.
24 (AG)The discerning sets his face toward wisdom,
    but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
25 (AH)A foolish son is a grief to his father
    (AI)and bitterness to (AJ)her who bore him.
26 (AK)To impose a fine on a righteous man is not good,
    nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.
27 Whoever (AL)restrains his words has knowledge,
    and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
28 Even a fool (AM)who keeps silent is considered wise;
    when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

35 The word of the Lord came to me: (A)“Son of man, (B)set your face (C)against (D)Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: (E)Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and (F)I will stretch out my hand against you, (G)and I will make you a desolation and a waste. (H)I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. Because (I)you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword (J)at the time of their calamity, (K)at the time of their final punishment, therefore, (L)as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; (M)because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. (N)I will make Mount Seir a waste (O)and a desolation, and I will cut off from it (P)all who come and go. And I will fill (Q)its mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all (R)your ravines (S)those slain with the sword shall fall. (T)I will make you a perpetual desolation, and (U)your cities shall not be inhabited. Then (V)you will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, (W)‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and (X)we will take possession of them’—although the (Y)Lord was there— 11 therefore, (Z)as I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you (AA)according to the anger and (AB)envy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And (AC)I will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord.

(AD)“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; (AE)they are given us to devour.’ 13 And (AF)you magnified yourselves against me (AG)with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: (AH)While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you (AI)rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, (AJ)Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then (AK)they will know that I am the Lord.

Prophecy to the Mountains of Israel

36 “And you, (AL)son of man, prophesy to (AM)the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God: Because (AN)the enemy said of you, (AO)‘Aha!’ and, ‘The ancient (AP)heights have become our possession,’ therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God: Precisely because (AQ)they made you desolate and crushed you from all sides, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and (AR)you became the talk and evil gossip of the people, therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God to (AS)the mountains and the hills, the ravines and the valleys, (AT)the desolate wastes and the deserted cities, which have become (AU)a prey and derision to the rest of the nations all around, therefore thus says the Lord God: Surely I have spoken in (AV)my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations and (AW)against all Edom, who (AX)gave my land to themselves as a possession (AY)with wholehearted joy and (AZ)utter contempt, that they might make its pasturelands a prey. Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to (BA)the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, Thus says the Lord God: (BB)Behold, I have spoken in my jealous wrath, because you have suffered (BC)the reproach of the nations. Therefore thus says the Lord God: (BD)I swear that the nations that are all around you (BE)shall themselves suffer reproach.

“But you, O mountains of Israel, (BF)shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for (BG)they will soon come home. For (BH)behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and (BI)you shall be tilled and sown. 10 And (BJ)I will multiply people on you, the whole house of Israel, all of it. (BK)The cities shall be inhabited and the waste places rebuilt. 11 And I will multiply on you (BL)man and beast, and (BM)they shall multiply and be fruitful. And I will cause you to be inhabited as in (BN)your former times, and (BO)will do more good to you than ever before. (BP)Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. (BQ)And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer (BR)bereave them of children. 13 Thus says the Lord God: Because they say to you, (BS)‘You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,’ 14 therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord God. 15 And I will not let you hear anymore (BT)the reproach of the nations, and you shall no longer bear the disgrace of the peoples and no longer cause your nation to stumble, declares the Lord God.”

The Lord's Concern for His Holy Name

16 The word of the Lord came to me: 17 (BU)“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, (BV)they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were (BW)like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. 18 So (BX)I poured out my wrath upon them (BY)for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols (BZ)with which they had defiled it. 19 (CA)I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. (CB)In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, (CC)they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern (CD)for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: (CE)It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, (CF)which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 (CG)And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. (CH)And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 (CI)I will take you (CJ)from the nations and gather you from all the countries and (CK)bring you into your own land. 25 (CL)I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from (CM)all your uncleannesses, and (CN)from all your idols (CO)I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you (CP)a new heart, and (CQ)a new spirit I will put within you. (CR)And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 (CS)And I will put my Spirit within you, (CT)and cause you to walk in my statutes and (CU)be careful to obey my rules.[a] 28 (CV)You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and (CW)you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And (CX)I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And (CY)I will summon the grain and make it abundant and (CZ)lay no famine upon you. 30 (DA)I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, (DB)that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then (DC)you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (DD)It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

33 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day that (DE)I cleanse you from all your iniquities, (DF)I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. 34 And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. 35 And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like (DG)the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then (DH)the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and (DI)replanted that which was desolate. (DJ)I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

37 “Thus says the Lord God: This also (DK)I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: (DL)to increase their people like (DM)a flock. 38 Like the flock for sacrifices,[b] (DN)like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so (DO)shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. (DP)Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and (A)I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given (B)the key to the shaft of (C)the bottomless pit.[a] He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft (D)rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and (E)the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came (F)locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. They were told (G)not to harm (H)the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have (I)the seal of God on their foreheads. They were allowed to torment them (J)for five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. And in those days (K)people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.

(L)In appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: (M)on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were (N)like human faces, their hair like women's hair, and (O)their teeth like lions' teeth; they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was (P)like the noise of many chariots with (Q)horses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people (R)for five months is in their tails. 11 They have (S)as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is (T)Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.[b]

12 (U)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.

13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from (V)the four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release (W)the four angels who are bound at (X)the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released (Y)to kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of (Z)mounted troops was (AA)twice ten thousand times ten thousand; (AB)I heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire[c] and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were (AC)like lions' heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (AD)did not repent of (AE)the works of their hands nor give up worshiping (AF)demons (AG)and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their (AH)sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
