The Escape to Egypt

¹³ When they had gone, an angel^(A) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.^(B) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”^(C)

¹⁴ So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, ¹⁵ where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled^(D) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”^[a](E)

⁹ There he went into a cave^(A) and spent the night.

The Lord Appears to Elijah

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”^(B)

¹⁰ He replied, “I have been very zealous^(C) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,^(D) torn down your altars,^(E) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,^(F) and now they are trying to kill me too.”

¹¹ The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain^(G) in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”^(H)

Then a great and powerful wind^(I) tore the mountains apart and shattered^(J) the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. ¹² After the earthquake came a fire,^(K) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.^(L)

²³ So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. ²⁴ Then they prayed,^(A) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.^(B) Show us^(C) which of these two you have chosen ²⁵ to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” ²⁶ Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.^(D)

²³ Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.^(A) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.^{(B) 24} Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.^(C)

²⁵ “All this I have spoken while still with you. ²⁶ But the Advocate,^(D) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,^(E) will teach you all things^(F) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.^(G)
