Keep in Step with the Spirit

16 But I say, (A)walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify (B)the desires of the flesh. 17 For (C)the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, (D)to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are (E)led by the Spirit, (F)you are not under the law. 19 Now (G)the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, (H)divisions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that (I)those who do[b] such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But (J)the fruit of the Spirit is (K)love, joy, peace, patience, (L)kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 (M)gentleness, (N)self-control; (O)against such things there is no law.

18 For I know that nothing good dwells (A)in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 (B)For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, (C)it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For (D)I delight in the law of God, (E)in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members (F)another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from (G)this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Cain and Abel

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of (A)the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of (B)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord (C)had regard for Abel and his offering, but (D)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? (E)If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. (F)Its desire is contrary to[c] you, but you must rule over it.”

Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and (G)killed him.
