Tyre’s King Overthrown

28 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, say to the [a]leader of Tyre, ‘The Lord [b]God says this:

“Because your heart is haughty
And you have said, ‘(A)I am a god,
I sit in the seat of [c]gods
In the heart of the seas’;
Yet you are a (B)mortal and not God,
Although you make your heart like the heart of God—
Behold, you are wiser than (C)Daniel;
There is no secret that is a match for you!
By your wisdom and understanding
You have acquired (D)riches for yourself
And have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries.
By your great wisdom, by your (E)trade
You have increased your riches,
And your (F)heart is haughty because of your riches—

Therefore this is what the Lord God says:

‘Because you have (G)made your heart
Like the heart of God,
Therefore, behold, I am going to bring (H)strangers against you,
The (I)most ruthless of the nations.
And they will draw their swords
Against the beauty of your wisdom
And profane your splendor.
They will bring you down to the pit,
And you will die the (J)death of those who are killed
In the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
In the presence of one who kills you,
Though you are a mortal and not God,
In the hands of those who wound you?
10 You will die the death of the (K)uncircumcised
By the hand of strangers,
For I have spoken!’ declares the Lord God!”’”

11 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, (L)take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“You [d]had the seal of [e]perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in (M)Eden, the garden of God;
(N)Every precious stone was your covering:
The (O)ruby, the topaz and the diamond;
The beryl, the onyx and the jasper;
The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald;
And the gold, the workmanship of your [f](P)settings and [g]sockets,
Was in you.
On the day that you were created
They were prepared.
14 You were the (Q)anointed cherub who [h]covers,
And I placed you there.
You were on the holy (R)mountain of God;
You walked in the midst of the (S)stones of fire.
15 You were (T)blameless in your ways
From the day you were created
Until (U)unrighteousness was found in you.
16 By the (V)abundance of your trade
[i]You were internally (W)filled with violence,
And you sinned;
Therefore I have cast you as profane
From the mountain of God.
And I have destroyed you, you [j]covering cherub,
From the midst of the stones of fire.
17 Your heart was haughty because of your (X)beauty;
You (Y)corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor.
I threw you to the ground;
I put you before (Z)kings,
That they may see you.
18 By the multitude of your wrongdoings,
In the unrighteousness of your trade
You profaned your sanctuaries.
Therefore I have brought (AA)fire from the midst of you;
It has consumed you,
And I have turned you to (AB)ashes on the earth
In the eyes of all who see you.
19 All who know you among the peoples
Are appalled at you;
You have become [k](AC)terrified
And you will cease to be (AD)forever.”’”

Judgment of Sidon

20 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, (AE)set your face toward (AF)Sidon, prophesy against her 22 and say, ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Sidon,
And I will appear in My glory in your midst.
Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I (AG)execute judgments against her,
And I will reveal Myself as holy in her.
23 For (AH)I will send a plague to her
And blood to her streets,
And the (AI)wounded will [l]fall in her midst
By the sword upon her on every side;
Then they will know that I am the Lord.

24 And there will no longer be for the house of Israel a (AJ)painful thorn or a hurtful thorn bush from any surrounding them who despised them; then they will know that I am the Lord God.”

Israel Regathered

25 ‘This is what the Lord God says: “When I (AK)gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and show Myself holy among them in the sight of the nations, then they will (AL)live on their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 They will (AM)live on it securely; and they will (AN)build houses, plant vineyards, and live securely when I (AO)execute judgments upon all around them who despise them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.”’”

Judgment of Egypt

29 In the (AP)tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against (AQ)Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all (AR)Egypt. Speak and say, ‘This is what the Lord [m]God says:

“Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt,
The great [n](AS)monster that lies in the midst of his [o]canals,
That (AT)has said, ‘My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’
I will put (AU)hooks in your jaws
And make the fish of your [p]canals cling to your scales.
And I will bring you up out of the midst of your [q]canals,
And all the fish of your [r]canals will cling to your scales.
I will (AV)abandon you to the wilderness, you and all the fish of your [s]canals;
You will fall on the [t]open field; you will not be brought together or [u](AW)gathered.
I have given you for (AX)food to the animals of the earth and to the birds of the sky.
Then all the inhabitants of Egypt will know that I am the Lord,
Because they have been only a (AY)staff made of reed to the house of Israel.
When they took hold of you with the hand,
You (AZ)broke and tore all their [v]hands;
And when they leaned on you,
You broke and made all their hips [w]shake.”

‘Therefore the Lord God says this: “Behold, I am going to (BA)bring upon you a sword, and I will cut off from you human and animal life. The (BB)land of Egypt will become a desolation and place of ruins. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“Because [x]you (BC)said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I have made it,’ 10 therefore, behold, I am (BD)against you and against your [y]canals, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene and as far as the border of [z]Cush. 11 A human foot will (BE)not pass through it, nor will the foot of an animal pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. 12 So I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the (BF)midst of deserted lands. And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate for forty years; and I will (BG)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands.”

13 ‘For this is what the Lord God says: “At the end of forty years I will (BH)gather the Egyptians from the peoples [aa]among whom they were scattered. 14 And I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of (BI)Pathros, to the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. 15 It will be the (BJ)lowest of the kingdoms, and it will not raise itself above the nations again. And I will make them small so that they will not (BK)rule over the nations. 16 And it will no longer be a kingdom on which (BL)the house of Israel relies, [ab](BM)bringing to mind the guilt of their having turned [ac]to Egypt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.”’”

17 Now in the (BN)twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 18 “Son of man, (BO)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor [ad]hard against Tyre; every head [ae]had a (BP)bald spot and every shoulder was rubbed raw. But he and his army acquired no wages from Tyre for the labor that he had [af]performed against it.” 19 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, I am going to (BQ)give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And he will carry off her (BR)wealth and capture her spoils and seize her plunder; and it will be wages for his army. 20 I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor which he [ag](BS)performed, because they acted for Me,” declares the Lord God.

21 “On that day I will make a (BT)horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will [ah](BU)open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Grief over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came again to me, saying, “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Lord [ai]God says:

(BV)Wail, ‘Woe for the day!’
For the day is near,
Indeed, (BW)the day of the Lord is near;
It will be a day of (BX)clouds,
A time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come upon Egypt,
And there will be trembling in [aj]Cush;
When the slain fall in Egypt,
They will (BY)take away her [ak]wealth,
And her foundations will be torn down.

[al]Cush, Put, Lud, all [am](BZ)Arabia, [an]Libya and the [ao]people of the land [ap]that is in league will fall with them by the sword.”

‘This is what the Lord says:
“Indeed, those who support (CA)Egypt will fall
And the pride of her power will come down;
From Migdol to Syene
They will fall within her by the sword,”
Declares the Lord God.
“They will be desolate
In the (CB)midst of the desolated lands;
And her cities will be
In the midst of the devastated cities.
And they will (CC)know that I am the Lord,
When I set a (CD)fire in Egypt
And all her helpers are broken.

On that day (CE)messengers will go out from Me in ships to frighten (CF)carefree [aq]Cush; and (CG)trembling will come on them as on the day of Egypt; for behold, it is coming!”

10 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

(CH)I will also make the [ar]hordes of Egypt cease
By the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11 He and his people with him,
(CI)The most ruthless of the nations,
Will be brought in to destroy the land;
And they will draw their swords against Egypt
And fill the land with the slain.
12 Moreover, I will make the (CJ)Nile canals dry
And (CK)sell the land into the hands of evil men.
And I will make the land desolate
And [as]all that is in it,
By the hand of strangers; I the Lord have spoken.”

13 ‘This is what the Lord God says:

“I will also (CL)destroy the idols
And make the [at]images cease from [au](CM)Memphis.
And there will no longer be a prince in the land of Egypt;
And I will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14 I will make (CN)Pathros desolate,
Set a fire in (CO)Zoan
And execute judgments on [av](CP)Thebes.
15 I will pour out My wrath on [aw]Sin,
The stronghold of Egypt;
I will also eliminate the hordes of [ax]Thebes.
16 I will set a fire in Egypt;
[ay]Sin will writhe in anguish,
[az]Thebes will be breached
And [ba]Memphis will have [bb]distresses daily.
17 The young men of [bc](CQ)On and of Pi-beseth
Will fall by the sword,
And [bd]the women will go into captivity.
18 In (CR)Tehaphnehes the day will [be]be (CS)dark
When I (CT)break there the yoke bars of Egypt.
Then the pride of her power will cease in her;
A cloud will cover her,
And her daughters will go into captivity.
19 So I will (CU)execute judgments on Egypt,
And they will know that I am the Lord.”’”

Victory for Babylon

20 In the (CV)eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh of the month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 21 “Son of man, I have (CW)broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, behold, it has not been (CX)bound up [bf]for healing [bg]or wrapped with a bandage, so that it may be strong to wield the sword. 22 Therefore this is what the Lord God says: ‘Behold, I am (CY)against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and I will break his arms, both the strong and the (CZ)broken; and I will make the sword (DA)fall from his hand. 23 And I will (DB)scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands. 24 For I will (DC)strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put (DD)My sword in his hand; and I will break the arms of Pharaoh, so that he will groan before him with the groans of a wounded man. 25 So I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fail. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he (DE)reaches out with it against the land of Egypt. 26 When I scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands, then they will know that I am the Lord.’”

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man(A), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne(B) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”(C)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.(D)
Are you wiser than Daniel[a]?(E)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.(F)
By your great skill in trading(G)
    you have increased your wealth,(H)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.(I)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;(J)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom(K)
    and pierce your shining splendor.(L)
They will bring you down to the pit,(M)
    and you will die a violent death(N)
    in the heart of the seas.(O)
Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,(P)
    in the hands of those who slay you.(Q)
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(R)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament(S) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(T)
13 You were in Eden,(U)
    the garden of God;(V)
every precious stone(W) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise(X) and beryl.[b]
Your settings and mountings[c] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.(Y)
14 You were anointed(Z) as a guardian cherub,(AA)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,(AB)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,(AC)
    from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud(AD)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.(AE)
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire(AF) come out from you,
    and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes(AG) on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.(AH)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled(AI) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(AJ)’”

A Prophecy Against Sidon

20 The word of the Lord came to me: 21 “Son of man, set your face against(AK) Sidon;(AL) prophesy against her 22 and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Sidon,
    and among you I will display my glory.(AM)
You will know that I am the Lord,
    when I inflict punishment(AN) on you
    and within you am proved to be holy.(AO)
23 I will send a plague upon you
    and make blood flow in your streets.
The slain will fall within you,
    with the sword against you on every side.
Then you will know that I am the Lord.(AP)

24 “‘No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns.(AQ) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather(AR) the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered,(AS) I will be proved holy(AT) through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.(AU) 26 They will live there in safety(AV) and will build houses and plant(AW) vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment(AX) on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the Lord their God.(AY)’”

A Prophecy Against Egypt

Judgment on Pharaoh

29 In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day, the word of the Lord came to me:(AZ) “Son of man, set your face against(BA) Pharaoh king of Egypt(BB) and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.(BC) Speak to him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I am against you, Pharaoh(BD) king of Egypt,
    you great monster(BE) lying among your streams.
You say, “The Nile(BF) belongs to me;
    I made it for myself.”
But I will put hooks(BG) in your jaws
    and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales.
I will pull you out from among your streams,
    with all the fish sticking to your scales.(BH)
I will leave you in the desert,
    you and all the fish of your streams.
You will fall on the open field
    and not be gathered(BI) or picked up.
I will give you as food
    to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.(BJ)

Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.

“‘You have been a staff of reed(BK) for the people of Israel. When they grasped you with their hands, you splintered(BL) and you tore open their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and their backs were wrenched.[d](BM)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will bring a sword against you and kill both man and beast.(BN) Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.

“‘Because you said, “The Nile(BO) is mine; I made it,(BP) 10 therefore I am against you(BQ) and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt(BR) a ruin and a desolate waste(BS) from Migdol(BT) to Aswan,(BU) as far as the border of Cush.[e](BV) 11 The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years.(BW) 12 I will make the land of Egypt desolate(BX) among devastated lands, and her cities will lie desolate forty years among ruined cities. And I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(BY)

13 “‘Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations where they were scattered. 14 I will bring them back from captivity and return them to Upper Egypt,(BZ) the land of their ancestry. There they will be a lowly(CA) kingdom.(CB) 15 It will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again exalt itself above the other nations.(CC) I will make it so weak that it will never again rule over the nations. 16 Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence(CD) for the people of Israel but will be a reminder(CE) of their sin in turning to her for help.(CF) Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.(CG)’”

Nebuchadnezzar’s Reward

17 In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month on the first day, the word of the Lord came to me:(CH) 18 “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar(CI) king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare(CJ) and every shoulder made raw.(CK) Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre. 19 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king(CL) of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder(CM) the land as pay for his army.(CN) 20 I have given him Egypt(CO) as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(CP)

21 “On that day I will make a horn[f](CQ) grow for the Israelites, and I will open your mouth(CR) among them. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(CS)

A Lament Over Egypt

30 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Wail(CT) and say,
    “Alas for that day!”
For the day is near,(CU)
    the day of the Lord(CV) is near—
a day of clouds,
    a time of doom for the nations.
A sword will come against Egypt,(CW)
    and anguish will come upon Cush.[g](CX)
When the slain fall in Egypt,
    her wealth will be carried away
    and her foundations torn down.(CY)

Cush and Libya,(CZ) Lydia and all Arabia,(DA) Kub and the people(DB) of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt.(DC)

“‘This is what the Lord says:

“‘The allies of Egypt will fall
    and her proud strength will fail.
From Migdol to Aswan(DD)
    they will fall by the sword within her,
declares the Sovereign Lord.
“‘They will be desolate
    among desolate lands,
and their cities will lie
    among ruined cities.(DE)
Then they will know that I am the Lord,
    when I set fire(DF) to Egypt
    and all her helpers are crushed.(DG)

“‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush(DH) out of her complacency. Anguish(DI) will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come.(DJ)

10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt
    by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar(DK) king of Babylon.(DL)
11 He and his army—the most ruthless of nations(DM)
    will be brought in to destroy the land.
They will draw their swords against Egypt
    and fill the land with the slain.(DN)
12 I will dry up(DO) the waters of the Nile(DP)
    and sell the land to an evil nation;
by the hand of foreigners
    I will lay waste(DQ) the land and everything in it.

I the Lord have spoken.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘I will destroy the idols(DR)
    and put an end to the images in Memphis.(DS)
No longer will there be a prince in Egypt,(DT)
    and I will spread fear throughout the land.
14 I will lay(DU) waste Upper Egypt,
    set fire to Zoan(DV)
    and inflict punishment on Thebes.(DW)
15 I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
    the stronghold of Egypt,
    and wipe out the hordes of Thebes.
16 I will set fire(DX) to Egypt;
    Pelusium will writhe in agony.
Thebes will be taken by storm;
    Memphis(DY) will be in constant distress.
17 The young men of Heliopolis(DZ) and Bubastis
    will fall by the sword,
    and the cities themselves will go into captivity.
18 Dark will be the day at Tahpanhes(EA)
    when I break the yoke of Egypt;(EB)
    there her proud strength will come to an end.
She will be covered with clouds,
    and her villages will go into captivity.(EC)
19 So I will inflict punishment(ED) on Egypt,
    and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Pharaoh’s Arms Are Broken

20 In the eleventh year, in the first month on the seventh day, the word of the Lord came to me:(EE) 21 “Son of man, I have broken the arm(EF) of Pharaoh(EG) king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed(EH) or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword. 22 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt.(EI) I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.(EJ) 23 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.(EK) 24 I will strengthen(EL) the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword(EM) in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan(EN) before him like a mortally wounded man. 25 I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall limp. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put my sword(EO) into the hand of the king of Babylon and he brandishes it against Egypt.(EP) 26 I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(EQ)
