David Anointed King

16 The Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since ^(B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? ^(C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, ^(D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” ²And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ^(E)‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ ³And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. ^(F)And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” ⁴Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city ^(G)came to meet him trembling and said, ^(H)“Do you come peaceably?” ⁵And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. ^(I)Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

⁶When they came, he looked on ^(J)Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.” ⁷But the Lord said to Samuel, ^(K)“Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, ^(L)but the Lord looks on the heart.” ⁸Then Jesse called ^(M)Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” ⁹Then Jesse made ^(N)Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” ¹⁰And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” ¹¹Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, ^(O)“There remains yet the youngest,^[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, ^(P)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” ¹²And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ^(Q)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^(R)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” ¹³Then Samuel took ^(S)the horn of oil ^(T)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(U)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

David in Saul's Service

¹⁴^(V)Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, ^(W)and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. ¹⁵And Saul's servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. ¹⁶Let our lord now command your servants ^(X)who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will ^(Y)play it, and you will be well.” ¹⁷So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.” ¹⁸One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, ^(Z)a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, ^(AA)and the Lord is with him.” ¹⁹Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, ^(AB)who is with the sheep.” ²⁰^(AC)And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. ²¹And David came to Saul ^(AD)and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. ²²And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” ²³And ^(AE)whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre ^(AF)and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

1 The words of Amos, who was among the ^(A)shepherds^[a] of ^(B)Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel ^(C)in the days of ^(D)Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of ^(E)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years^[b] before ^(F)the earthquake.

Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

²And he said:

^(G)“The Lord roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
^(H)the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the ^(I)top of ^(J)Carmel withers.”

³Thus says the Lord:

^(K)“For three transgressions of ^(L)Damascus,
    and for four, ^(M)I will not revoke the punishment,^[c]
because they have threshed ^(N)Gilead
    with threshing sledges of iron.
⁴^(O)So I will send a fire upon the house of ^(P)Hazael,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of ^(Q)Ben-hadad.
⁵I will ^(R)break the gate-bar of ^(S)Damascus,
    and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of ^(T)Aven,^[d]
and him who holds the scepter from ^(U)Beth-eden;
    and the people of ^(V)Syria shall go into exile to ^(W)Kir,”
says the Lord.

⁶Thus says the Lord:

^(X)“For three transgressions of ^(Y)Gaza,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because ^(Z)they carried into exile a whole people
    to deliver them up to Edom.
⁷So I will send a fire upon the wall of ^(AA)Gaza,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.
⁸I will cut off the inhabitants from ^(AB)Ashdod,
    and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
    and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
says the Lord God.

⁹Thus says the Lord:

^(AC)“For three transgressions of ^(AD)Tyre,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
    and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
¹⁰So I will send a fire upon the wall of ^(AE)Tyre,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.”

¹¹Thus says the Lord:

^(AF)“For three transgressions of ^(AG)Edom,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
^(AH)because he pursued his brother with the sword
    ^(AI)and cast off all pity,
^(AJ)and his anger tore perpetually,
    ^(AK)and he kept his wrath forever.
¹²So I will send a fire upon ^(AL)Teman,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of ^(AM)Bozrah.”

¹³Thus says the Lord:

^(AN)“For three transgressions of the ^(AO)Ammonites,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because ^(AP)they have ripped open pregnant women in ^(AQ)Gilead,
    that they might enlarge their border.
¹⁴So I will kindle a fire in the wall of ^(AR)Rabbah,
    ^(AS)and it shall devour her strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
    ^(AT)with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
¹⁵and ^(AU)their king shall go into exile,
    he and his princes^[e] together,”
says the Lord.

The Temptation of Jesus

4 ^(A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness ^(B)to be tempted by the devil. ²And after fasting ^(C)forty days and forty nights, he ^(D)was hungry. ³And ^(E)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(F)the Son of God, command ^(G)these stones to become loaves of bread.” ⁴But he answered, ^(H)“It is written,

^(I)“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

⁵^(J)Then the devil took him to ^(K)the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple ⁶and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

^(L)“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

⁷Jesus said to him, “Again ^(M)it is written, ^(N)‘You shall not ^(O)put the Lord your God to the test.’” ⁸^(P)Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(Q)Satan! For ^(R)it is written,

^(S)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and ^(T)him only shall you serve.’”

¹¹Then the devil left him, and behold, ^(U)angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

¹²Now when he heard that ^(V)John had been arrested, ^(W)he withdrew into Galilee. ¹³And leaving ^(X)Nazareth he went and lived in ^(Y)Capernaum by ^(Z)the sea, in the territory of ^(AA)Zebulun and Naphtali, ¹⁴^(AB)so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

¹⁵^(AC)“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
    the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
¹⁶^(AD)the people dwelling in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and ^(AE)shadow of death,
    on them a light has dawned.”

¹⁷^(AF)From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ^(AG)“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^[a]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

¹⁸^(AH)While walking by ^(AI)the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you ^(AJ)fishers of men.”^[b] ²⁰Immediately they left their nets and followed him. ²¹And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. ²²Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

²³^(AK)And he went throughout all Galilee, ^(AL)teaching in their synagogues and ^(AM)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and ^(AN)healing every disease and every affliction among the people. ²⁴So his fame spread throughout all ^(AO)Syria, and ^(AP)they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and ^(AQ)pains, ^(AR)those oppressed by demons, ^(AS)those having seizures, and ^(AT)paralytics, and he healed them. ²⁵^(AU)And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the ^(AV)Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
