God Is Light

^5 (A)This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that ^(B)God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. ^6 (C)If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we ^(D)lie and ^(E)do not practice the truth;

Christ Is Our Advocate

2 ^(A)My little children, I am ^(B)writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, ^(C)we have an ^[a](D)Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

^3 (A)By this we know that we have come to ^(B)know Him, if we ^(C)keep His commandments.

⁵ but whoever ^(A)follows His word, in him the ^(B)love of God has truly been perfected. ^(C)By this we know that we are in Him: ⁶ the one who says that he ^(D)remains in Him ^(E)ought, himself also, walk just as He walked.

²⁹ If you know that ^(A)He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness also ^(B)has been born of Him.

^2 (A)Beloved, now we are ^(B)children of God, and ^(C)it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He ^(D)appears, we will be ^(E)like Him, because we will ^(F)see Him just as He is. ³ And everyone who has this ^(G)hope set on Him ^(H)purifies himself, just as He is pure.

⁴ Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and ^(A)sin is lawlessness. ⁵ You know that He ^(B)appeared in order to ^(C)take away sins; and ^(D)in Him there is no sin. ⁶ No one who remains in Him ^(E)sins continually; no one who sins continually has seen Him or ^[a](F)knows Him. ^7 (G)Little children, make sure no one ^(H)deceives you; ^(I)the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; ⁸ the one who practices sin is ^(J)of the devil; for the devil ^[b]has been sinning from the beginning. ^(K)The Son of God ^(L)appeared for this purpose, ^(M)to destroy the works of the devil. ⁹ No one who has been ^(N)born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God. ¹⁰ By this the ^(O)children of God and the ^(P)children of the devil are obvious: ^[c]anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who ^(Q)does not love his ^(R)brother and sister.

¹⁴ We know that we have ^(A)passed out of death into life, ^(B)because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death. ¹⁵ Everyone who ^(C)hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that ^(D)no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.

⁸ The one who does not love does not know God, because ^(A)God is love.
