⁹ I wrote to you in my letter ^(A)not to associate with sexually immoral people; ¹⁰ I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with ^(B)idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world. ¹¹ But ^[a]actually, I ^[b]wrote to you not to associate ^[c]with any so-called ^(C)brother if he is a sexually immoral person, or a greedy person, or ^(D)an idolater, or is verbally abusive, or habitually drunk, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a person. ¹² For what business of mine is it to judge ^(E)outsiders? ^(F)Do you not judge those who are within the church? ¹³ But those who are outside, God ^[d]judges. ^(G)Remove the evil person from among yourselves.

Reaffirm Your Love

2 But I decided this ^[a]for my own sake, that I ^(A)would not come to you in sorrow again. ² For if I ^(B)cause you sorrow, who then will be the one making me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me? ³ This is the very thing I ^(C)wrote you, so that ^(D)when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having ^(E)confidence in you all that my joy was the joy of you all. ⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I ^(F)wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you.

⁵ But ^(G)if anyone has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not for me, but in some degree—^[b]not to say too much—for all of you. ⁶ Sufficient for such a person is ^(H)this punishment which was imposed by the majority, ⁷ so that on the other hand, you should rather ^(I)forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a person might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸ Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. ⁹ For to this end ^(J)I also wrote, so that I might ^[c](K)put you to the test, whether you are ^(L)obedient in all things. ¹⁰ But one whom you forgive anything, I also forgive; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did so for your sakes ^(M)in the presence of Christ, ¹¹ so that no advantage would be taken of us by ^(N)Satan, for ^(O)we are not ignorant of his schemes.

⁶ Now we command you, brothers and sisters, ^(A)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you ^[a](B)keep away from every brother or sister who ^[b]leads a ^[c](C)disorderly life and not one in accordance with ^(D)the tradition which ^[d]you received from us. ⁷ For you yourselves know how you ought to ^[e](E)follow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined way among you, ⁸ nor did we ^(F)eat ^[f]anyone’s bread ^[g]without paying for it, but with ^(G)labor and hardship we kept ^(H)working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you; ⁹ not because we do not have ^(I)the right to this, but in order to offer ourselves ^(J)as a role model for you, so that you would ^[h]follow our example. ¹⁰ For even ^(K)when we were with you, we used to give you this order: ^(L)if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. ¹¹ For we hear that some among you are ^(M)leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like ^(N)busybodies. ¹² Now we command and ^(O)exhort such persons in the Lord Jesus Christ to ^(P)work ^[i]peacefully and eat their own bread. ¹³ But as for you, ^(Q)brothers and sisters, ^(R)do not grow weary of doing good.

¹⁴ If anyone does not obey our ^[j]instruction ^[k](S)in this letter, take special note of that person so as ^(T)not to associate with him, so that he will be ^(U)put to shame. ¹⁵ And yet ^(V)do not regard that person as an enemy, but ^[l](W)admonish that one as a ^(X)brother or sister.
