The NIV 365 Day Devotional

Duration: 365 days

Healthy Boundaries

Like a city building walls to protect itself, setting up healthy boundaries is one of the most important things we can do as Christians.

Jesus had exceptionally healthy boundaries and took care of himself, even after he got very popular and the crowds pressed him to be with them. Luke points out that even though large crowds would gather to hear Jesus and to have their sickness cured, he would go off to some place where he could be alone and pray (see Luke 5:15 – 16).

This must have disturbed his disciples, because the crowds were their supporters. But in fact, Jesus was listening to God and had strong enough boundaries to turn down a crowd of people in order to do what he felt God wanted him to do.

When we create firm boundaries, we have much more energy to do the work God wants us to do. With healthy boundaries, we can shut out other things and make room for spiritual growth, going to meetings, prayer, exercise and reading. We can share the experience, strength, and hope that we are finding — without feeling guilt or shame.

If we do not have good boundaries, then the call of other people becomes stronger than the call of God. We can’t actually do his will if it is against the will of the people around us. Boundaries are therefore a very important part of living out our walk with Christ.

What is one boundary you need to set for yourself today?

PRAYER:

Lord, help me to keep my boundaries clear and in place, so that I’m not like a city vulnerable to attack.
