Words from the Cross: Reunion
“Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ When he had said this, he breathed his last.” Luke 23:46
What would you do if one day the whole world went dark? First off, you’d search for a flashlight or your cell phone. Then you’d probably make calls, trying anxiously to figure out what went wrong.
On the day Jesus was crucified, the sun stopped shining for three hours. This wasn’t a momentary blip that people could dismiss—three hours was a significant time! They must have been terrified since nothing like this had ever happened before. Many witnesses to Jesus’ crucifixion knew that His death, the tearing of the temple curtain, and the prolonged darkness all came at the hands of God. As Jesus was about to die, He spoke words from Psalm 31: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (v. 5).
Notice how He died quoting Scripture, just as He began His earthly ministry by quoting Scripture to Satan in the desert (see Matthew 4:1-11). Store God’s Word in your heart so it is at the ready for you. Let it remind you of your Savior who freely gave Himself, buying a true reunion between you and Him at the outrageous price of His precious blood.
