If you grew up going to Christian events in the ’90s, you heard this kind of crazy metaphor: Your soul is like a house, with lots of rooms and doors. Jesus wants to come in and clean up every room. If you were at a ski retreat or youth beach trip or a revival night, the male speaker with the microphone and the airbrushed T-shirt would begin describing the one room you always tried to keep locked and hidden from God. Maybe you kept a padlock on the door, or maybe you’d even forgotten that it existed, but God wanted to come in (with grace) and tidy that space up.
Whether you pronounce it distinctly “N-A-S-B” or informally “naz-bee,” since its completion in the 1970s following 18 years of work, the New American Standard Bible (NASB) is widely embraced as the gold standard for the formal equivalence Bible translation philosophy, the method of rendering English text word-for-word from the original biblical languages as much as possible. The NASB 2020 updated version is now available.

When and how was the NASB first created?
Pike Lambeth: In 1959, Mr. Dewy Lockman sensed the need for a translation of the Bible that would be clearly readable in the current English language, but, without sacrificing any accuracy in the translation from Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic. A group of scholars and pastors were organized with this vision in mind and work on the New American Standard Bible was begun and finally completed in 1977.
Thomas Nelson, a division of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, announces the publishing of the Maclaren Series: Large Print Verse-by-Verse Reference Bible (Thomas Nelson, 2021) in the New King James Version (NKJV) and the King James Version (KJV) Bible translations.

I was riding in the back of one of my parents’ cars; I can’t quite remember which one.
It was the early ’90s, and seatbelts felt more negotiable then, so I was lying down on my left side, facing the floorboard, which was littered with kids’ road trip materials—coloring books, crayons, a few small plastic toys. The warm southern sun was beating down on the parts of my body that weren’t tucked into the cloth seats, warming my skin, my cotton t-shirt, and shorts. I was about to turn nine years old.
