Idolatry: The One Great Sin that All Others Come From

Kyle IdlemanBy Kyle Idleman

Idolatry is huge in the Bible,
dominant in our personal lives,
and irrelevant in our mistaken estimations.
— Os Guinness

Imagine a man who has been coughing constantly. This cough keeps him up half of the night and interrupts any conversation he has that lasts more than a minute or two. The cough is so unrelenting that he goes to the doctor.

The doctor runs his tests.

Lung cancer.

Now imagine the doctor knows how tough the news will be to handle. So he doesn’t tell his patient about cancer. Instead, he writes a prescription for some strong cough medicine and tells him that he should be feeling better soon. The man is delighted with this prognosis. And sure enough, he sleeps much better that night. The cough syrup seems to have solved his problem.

Meanwhile, very quietly, the cancer is eating away at his body.

A Prayer for Thanksgiving Day

howtostudythebible

Pastor and author Mel Lawrenz is interrupting his weekly How to Live the Bible series to focus our attention on the role of gratitude in our lives.

In the USA this week we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. I have always treasured this holiday because its intention is so clear and so right. It is not so cluttered with commercialism and busyness. It recalls the harvest of fields, and invites us to look for a harvest of God’s goodness in our own lives. In the book of Philippians the apostle Paul gives us a powerful invitation to pray.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. –Philippians 4:6

Terminal Illness Brings Intimacy with God: An Interview with John Paine

John PaineHow can a terminal diagnosis lead to experiencing God’s intimate, comforting, tangible presence? At middle age, John Paine thought he knew what it meant to have a relationship with God. But his journey into true, mystical intimacy with God began when a neurologist diagnosed him with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Bible Gateway interviewed John Paine about his book, The Luckiest Man: How A Seventeen-Year Battle with ALS Led Me to Intimacy with God (Thomas Nelson, 2018).

Describe your life before your diagnosis.

John Paine: From the outside my life looked fantastic as a successful business man, family man, and church leader. I projected confidence to the world at large, but inwardly life’s trials were crumbling the perfect projected image. I was weary keeping up the mirage. Peace, joy, and contentment were occasionally present but never lasted. Christ’s promised abundant life seemed illusive and I felt exhausted searching for it. Secretly, I was ready to give up on the concept.

Explain what amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is and what your symptoms were when they began.

John Paine: ALS is a degenerative neuromuscular disease that kills the muscle’s motor neurons resulting in total body paralysis. Most patients die from suffocation as the diaphragm loses its communication with the smart cells telling it to breathe. My first symptoms appeared as involuntary muscle twitches (fasciculations) in my left forearm followed by a loss of strength.

The Missing Ingredient of Advent

Advent ConspiracyBy Rick McKinley, Chris Seay, and Greg Holder

Our hearts are formed by what we worship. Excitement, anticipation, hope—each of these emotions swells around the object of our dearest affection. We spend our time and energy on what matters most to us.

What do we worship during Advent? “Jesus” is the right answer, of course, but is it the true answer? Does the way we spend our time, money, and energy testify that we worship God incarnate? Season after season, many churchgoers have learned to say the right things without allowing their words to reach their hearts. Simply saying that Jesus is the desire of our hearts doesn’t make it so. In fact, proper, expected words can sometimes hinder true worship by keeping our lips and hearts apart.

Following Jesus Without Faking It: An Interview with Andi Andrew

Andi AndrewWe live in a culture where many identify as “Christian” without fully embracing what it looks like to follow Jesus day-in and day-out. After gathering for worship, do we simply go about our business, void of true transformation? Is the gospel simply a self-help tool; the church just a place where our needs can be met? Are we really following Jesus?

Bible Gateway interviewed Andi Andrew (@andiandrew) about her book, Fake or Follower: Refusing to Settle for a Shallow Faith (Baker Books, 2018).

What’s the difference between truly following Jesus and “faking it”?

Andi Andrew: We fake it when we settle for a shallow faith, manifest in hollow religion, mediocrity obligation, and checking the box of Sunday attendance rather than living a life of surrender, no matter how uncomfortable it gets.

Dear friend reading “How to Live the Bible”…
