Why another translation of the New Testament? As Tom Wright points out in his Preface: ‘Translating the New Testament is something that each generation ought to be doing. Just as Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread, we can never simply live on yesterday’s bread, on the interpretations and translations of previous generations.’
All published and unpublished works in the UK are protected by copyright until 70 years after the death of the authors.
The practice called fair dealing allows free use of copyright material employed to illustrate an idea or comment or give weight to an argument, in research or private study, without the need for permission, under the following conditions:
Prose: A single extract under 400 words or several extracts from the same publication, each under 300 words and totalling under 800 words. Note below.
Poetry and songs: Fair dealing does not apply. Permission must be sought from the publisher for all extracts, and this will usually be granted on payment of a fee.
However, please note that if an extract is included in a commercially published project or as a piece that stands alone without comment on its content or direct relevance to surrounding material (e.g. as an extract in an anthology of prayers, meditations or poetry), permission must be sought to include the extract no matter what its length and a fee may apply.
About Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge
At SPCK we take a great pride in the breadth of our resourcing of the Christian community.
In our mission statement we commit ourselves to:
• Communicating the Christian faith in its rich diversity
• Helping people to understand it and to develop their personal faith
• Equipping Christians for mission and ministry
Our publishing encompasses books across a broad spectrum of Christian belief, resourcing people of different traditions and offering the opportunity to understand other strands of Christian thinking more fully. We are very committed to reaching those outside the church (as well as those within it), and we are proud that SPCK has the ability to sell titles strongly beyond the traditional markets for Christian books. We believe our authors value this commitment to enriching the dialogue between traditions, and we welcome those who want to be part of this process.
