Letter of Jeremiah 14
Clearly they are no gods, so don’t be afraid of them.
One of them holds a sceptre, like a district judge, but is unable to destroy anyone who offends it.
Another has a dagger in its right hand and an ax but cannot defend itself from war and robbers.
Like a local ruler the god holds a scepter, though unable to destroy any one who offends it.
Forsooth (these) idols have a sceptre, as a man hath; (yea), as the judge of a country, (but) that slayeth not a man sinning against himself. [Forsooth they have a sceptre, or king’s rod, as a man; as a judge of a country, that slayeth not the sinning (one) into him.]
