a people quiet and unsuspecting. The Israelites were to destroy only the seven proscribed Canaanite nations (Deut. 7:1). To other peoples they were first to offer peace (Deut. 20:10–18). Dan did not ask who these people were (Josh. 9:1–27) and may have destroyed an innocent population. Moreover, this was not the land God had allotted them (Josh. 19:47).
