13:1 Joshua was old. The implication is that further conquest will not take place under him.

very much land. The Book of Joshua speaks of both the complete fulfillment of God’s promises (11:23; 21:45) and the incompleteness of the actual possession of the land (e.g., 13:1; 23:4–5). Compare the New Testament perspective of the completeness of what has been given in Christ, and the future expectation that still remains (e.g., Eph. 1:3, 14). While the Book of Joshua testifies to Israel’s experience of the Lord’s complete faithfulness, the promise remained, pointing to the future. See notes 1:4; 21:45; Gen. 13:15.
