2:5 has not God chosen. Inheritance in the kingdom is based on God’s sovereign election. He chooses not according to merit or worldly status. The standards of this world have no influence on God’s gracious election (1 Cor. 1:28, 29; Eph. 1:4). The text does not warrant any form of “poverty mysticism” by which poverty in itself renders a person good (Ps. 9:18 note).
