1:6 expanse. Describing the sky in terms of how it appears from the earth, the Hebrew suggests something flat and hard (Job 37:18; Is. 40:22). In vv. 6–8 it refers ambiguously to the atmosphere or sky (or both). Here it separates rain clouds from rivers and seas.
