19:1 came into . . . Sinai. The wilderness of Sinai lay in the southeast region of the Sinai peninsula. Mount Sinai is traditionally identified as Jebel Musa, a mountain with a broad plain at its base that seems to fit the biblical evidence (v. 2; cf. Deut. 9:21 note). Israel would remain at Sinai for eleven months (Num. 10:11).
