23:9–14 Because the camp of Israelite soldiers was a place of God’s presence as divine Warrior (v. 14; 20:4), the camp was to be kept pure of unclean things. In view here are occurrences that were both hygienically and ceremonially unclean: instances of urination or perhaps nocturnal emission (v. 10; cf. Lev. 15:16), and defecation in the camp (v. 13).
