18:18 pillar. Compare Saul’s action in 1 Sam. 15:12. In life Absalom had envisaged for himself a king’s career and had erected a pillar of remembrance in his own honor; in death he was branded a traitor and buried under a pile of stones.
King’s Valley. Probably near Jerusalem (Gen. 14:17).
no son. Absalom’s three sons, mentioned but not named in 14:27, presumably were not yet born or were already deceased when Absalom erected his monument.
