4:23 It is neither new moon nor Sabbath. Ancient Israel had a lunar calendar, and a festival was celebrated at each New Moon (Num. 10:10; 28:11–15; Ezra 3:5; Neh. 10:33; Is. 1:13, 14; Amos 8:5). The law did not permit work on the Sabbath, and possibly not on the New Moon either (Ex. 16:23; 20:8–10; 1 Sam. 20:5; 1 Chr. 23:31).
