struck him down. Assyrian documents record that in a struggle for the throne in 681 b.c. one of Sennacherib’s sons killed him. The author of Kings has telescoped the events surrounding Sennacherib’s shameful defeat (701 b.c.) and his assassination (681 b.c.).
Ararat. The word is another name for Urartu, present day Armenia (Gen. 8:4).
Esarhaddon. He ruled Assyria from 681–669 b.c.
