FESTAL GARMENT, FESTAL ROBE (חֲלִפֹ֣ות שְׂמָלֹ֑ת, or חֲלִפֹ֥ת בְּגָדִֽים, festal garment; KJV, CHANGE OF RAIMENT or GARMENTS; NEB, CHANGE OF CLOTHING). Though literally “change of clothes” the context often implies a (costly) gift and thus “festal garment” or clothing worn on special occasions (see Gen 45:22; Judg 14:12, 13, 19; 2 Kings 5:5, 22, 23). Another term, “festal robe” (מַחֲלָצﯴת, H4711), is used for the robes of Jerusalem’s “society women” (Isa 3:22, KJV “changeable suits of apparel”). Translated “rich apparel” (KJV, “change of raiment”) for the high priest’s garment in Zechariah 3:4.
