Abaddon

ABADDON ə băd’ ən (̓Αβαδδών, G3, destruction). This is the name given to the satanic angel and king of the abyss in Revelation 9:11, whose name is tr. into Gr. as ̓Απολλύων, G661, destroyer. It is a transliteration of Heb. אֲבַדּﯴן, H11, (from אָבַד, H6), (place of) destruction, ruin. In the above v. destruction is personified; hence, “destroyer.” Abaddon (or Apollyon) was manifested after the fifth angel had sounded the fifth trumpet. In the OT Abaddon is used almost as a proper noun to connote the place or condition of utter ruin reserved for the wicked in Sheol (the realm or abode of the dead). It is used only in wisdom lit. (Job 26:6; 28:22; 31:12; Ps 88:11 [MT v. 12]; Prov 15:11; 27:20) and occurs parallel to Sheol, “death” (מָ֫וֶת, H4638), and “grave” (קֶ֫בֶר, H7700). Apollyon is one of John Bunyan’s characters in Pilgrim’s Progress. “In Rabbinic literature אֲבַדּﯴן, H11, as appellative signifies ‘destruction’ and as proper noun the ‘place of destruction’ = Gehinnom” (TDNT, I, 4, n. 1). See Apollyon.
