V 1–8: OPPRESSORS OVERCOME In the second half of Zechariah’s prophetic ministry, recorded in chapter nine and beyond, he makes specific prophecies which will come true. Zechariah announces that God is against the enemies of Israel and lists some of them. The self-sufficiency of Tyre and Sidon will be overcome and other nations will fear when they see it. God will deal with the Philistines and camp around His people to save them from future oppressors. V 9–10: MEEK MONARCH Thus, the coming of the Messiah is seen as a King who is ‘Just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey’. Peace will follow and dominion will be His. (Prophecies often merge the first and the second comings of Christ.) V 11–17: DEFENDING DELIVERER God’s people will be taken from their imprisonment and will benefit from God’s restoration and protection. God’s might and splendour will be seen as His restored people thrive.
