Ruth 4

V 1–6: FAIRNESS Boaz’ transparent integrity is shown in the open, friendly and fair way in which he approaches the man who has a prior right to redeem the land once owned by Elimelech, Naomi’s dead husband. Initially, the man seems keen to redeem it. Then he learns that this will involve taking Ruth as his wife. To avoid ruining his own inheritance, he then declines. V 7–12: FORMALITY Boaz observes the legal custom and formality of witnessing the deal by giving a sandal to the other party. He makes it quite clear that he will redeem the land and take Ruth as his wife. He seems enthusiastic! V 13–17: FATHERHOOD Boaz marries Ruth and a child, Obed, is born to them. V 18–22: FAMILY Obed will become the grandfather of David, and thus be in the family line of the Messiah. What a wonderful ending to a very unpromising start! This parallels the gospel and is a principle that a Christian can rely on when times are difficult.
