Ruth 3

V 1–11: READY We need to know that in a kinsman-redeemer situation, a woman who can qualify may approach the kinsman-redeemer to propose marriage, quite honourably and without any lack of morality or dignity. Following Naomi’s counsel, Ruth prepares as a bride and makes the approach to Boaz. It is quite clear that this is done on an honourable and open basis. She asks to be taken under his wing as a ‘close relative’. He specifically remarks that she is virtuous. V 12–15: REDEMPTION Boaz promises that unless a nearer kinsman-redeemer wishes to exercise his right of redemption, he will purchase the land as kinsman-redeemer. Meanwhile, he secretly gives her a generous supply of barley. V 16–18: RETURN Ruth returns and tells Naomi what has happened. Naomi wisely counsels patience.
