V 1–20: CARE IN CARRYING The Kohathites are part of the tribe of Levi. A census is to be taken of their males between thirty and fifty years old who work in the tabernacle. Their main task is to show great care in carrying the holy things and tabernacle furnishings. First, Aaron and his sons must ensure that these sanctified items are adequately covered, in accordance with God’s given instructions. The Kohathites are not to look at or touch these things in case they die. God is a holy God and any work done for Him in His name has to be done with holiness in mind. V 21–28: CARRYING THE CURTAINS Another family of the tribe of Levi, the Gershonites, also are to have a census. Their task, under Ithamar’s supervision, is to carry the curtains and the coverings used in the tabernacle. V 29–33: CARRYING THE CONSTRUCTION Also undergoing a census is the third family in the tribe of Levi, the Merarites. Their task, again under Ithamar, is to carry the construction of crossbars and frames for the tabernacle. V 34–49: COUNTING THE CONSECRATED The consecrated families in Levi’s tribe, dedicated to the service of the tabernacle, are counted as a result of each census taken. The total of thirty to fifty year olds in the
