Matthew 17

V 1–8: TRANSFIGURATION With Peter, James, and John, Jesus goes to a high mountain. He is transfigured before them with a face like the sun and clothes as white as light. Moses and Elijah appear. As Peter proposes making tabernacles for Jesus, Moses and Elijah, God the Father tells the disciples to hear Jesus, His well pleasing and beloved Son. Jesus reassures them in their fear, and then they see only Him. V 9: TIMING Jesus tells them not to reveal the transfiguration to anyone until after His resurrection. V 10–13: TEACHING Jesus reinforces the unique revelation they have had by teaching God’s truth to them, while discussing Elijah. He links the events with the ministry of John the Baptist. V 14–23: TESTED The disciples are unable to heal an epileptic boy whose epilepsy is caused by demon-possession. Jesus heals him and tells them that faith in Him and more concentration on prayer and fasting would have enabled them to see him healed. He then underlines His coming sufferings, death, and resurrection, and they are very sorrowful. V 24–27: TAX Jesus teaches the disciples through Peter, that they should pay taxes due from them (here the temple tax). He then provides the money miraculously through a fish.
