John 16

V 1–4: PERSECUTION Jesus predicts a time when His disciples will face death from those who imagine they are doing God’s service by killing them. V 5–15: PROMISE He promises them that, when He goes away, the Holy Spirit will come to them. He will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. He will guide them into all truth and glorify Jesus. V 16–22: PREDICTION Jesus tells them that soon they will not see Him and later they will see Him again, as He goes to His Father. He predicts His death, resurrection, and ascension and that their sorrow will be turned to joy, much as a woman rejoices when a child is born. V 23–24: PRAYER When He is ascended into heaven, they will be able to pray in His name and receive what they ask for, having their joy full. V 25–30: PLAIN In plain language Jesus tells them that the Father loves them because they love His Son and because they believe that Jesus came from the Father. Therefore He will grant their requests in His name and in accordance with His will. He confirms that He came from the Father and will return to Him. His disciples believe in Him. V 31–33: PEACE Despite all the troubles surging around, Jesus tells them that in Him they will have peace and that He has overcome the world.
