V 1–5: TORMENTING TIMES At night, Job wishes for morning. His passing days seem hopeless to him, because of his great physical affliction. V 6–10: PASSING PRESENCE He realises that his life is like a weaver’s shuttle which passes to and fro so quickly, or like a breath, or a cloud, which vanishes away. V 11–16: MEANINGLESS MESS He cannot but speak of this and complain from his bitterness. Life is loathsome to him and seems to be a meaningless mess. V 17–21: SIMPLE SOLUTION? He finally replies to Eliphaz’s first speech by suggesting there is a simple solution: if sin has caused his suffering, why does not God simply pardon it, and take away his iniquity? We know his sin did not cause his suffering.
