Job 2

V 1–8: SATAN’S NEXT STEP When God tells Satan that Job has not cursed Him, despite losing everything, Satan responds that if his body is touched, he will curse God. God gives Satan permission to afflict Job bodily, but his life must be spared. Satan responds by covering Job with painful boils from head to foot. While Job mourns in the midst of the ashes, he scrapes himself with a bit of broken pottery. V 9–10: WISE TOWARDS WIFE Job’s wife tells Job to curse God, which is what Satan wants, and die, which is what God decreed must not happen. Job’s response is spiritual and right. He accepts God’s sovereignty in all that lies before him. He does not sin with his lips. V 11–13: COMING OF COMFORTERS Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, hear what happened to Job and come to mourn with him and comfort him. For seven complete days, they sit speechless with him on the ground. He is unrecognisable through the boils and his grief is very great. Perhaps the best two things that the comforters do is to have compassion on Job, and then to keep quiet when they come to see him! Most of the rest is downhill from now on!
