V 1–6: FADING FLOWER Job’s argument, again, is that his short life is fading as a flower or as a shadow and that man is born for trouble. V 7–10: CONTINUOUS CYCLE He compares mankind to a tree which, even if it is cut down, will sprout branches again and manifest new life. V 11–12: DEPRESSING DRYNESS He sees man as a dried-up river or as a sea that has been diverted, leaving only sand. V 13–17: PLAINTIVE PRAYER He asks God to hide him in the grave, conceal him from God’s wrath, and ultimately to cover his sin. V 18–22: PAINFUL PROCESS He describes himself as an eroding mountain or as a stone worn away by water, or as soil washed away by the flow of torrents. His hope is eroded in that way and he has pain.
