1 Samuel 23

V 1–5: DELIVERANCE David delivers the city of Keilah from the Philistines, having first enquired of the Lord twice. V 6–13: DEPARTURE David and his 600 men are forced to flee from Keilah. Using the ephod of the escaped priest, Abiathar, David is warned by God that Saul will come there, and that the people of Keilah will deliver him to Saul. V 14–18: DEFENCE David’s defence is to stay in strongholds in the wilderness, especially in the mountains. While he is there, Jonathan comes to strengthen him in God and to reassure him that he will be king. They ratify and renew their personal covenant before the Lord. V 19–26: DETERMINED Saul hounds David with great determination and gets information from the Ziphites about David’s whereabouts. Finally, Saul has David encircled. V 27: DEVIATED With the net closing on David, Saul is deviated from his immediate aim of killing him. As a result of receiving a message, he moves away quickly to defend Israel against the invading Philistines. David calls the place the ‘Rock of Escape’. David flees from there to strongholds at En-Gedi.
