1 Chronicles 10

V 1–6: DEATH In the battle against the Philistines, Saul is wounded and takes his own life. His armour bearer commits suicide. His three sons die in the battle. V 7: DEFEAT The Israelite army flees, and the abandoned towns are occupied by the Philistines. V 8–10: DESECRATION The bodies of Saul and his sons are stripped and desecrated. Saul’s armour is displayed and his head is hung in the temple of Dagon, the Philistine idol god. V 11–12: DEVOTION The valiant men of King Saul retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons and bury them in Jabesh, where they fast for seven days. Here is true devotion. V 13–14a: DISASTROUS Saul’s unfaithfulness to God, breaking God’s word, consulting a medium for guidance, and failure to enquire of the Lord, all proved disastrous. These are the reasons now stated why he is killed and why Israel is overcome. V 14b: DAVID David now becomes king of Israel.
