Paul’s major purpose is to command Timothy to come to him before winter (4:9, 21). However, Paul also wants Timothy to keep himself approved before God (2:15), so he encourages Timothy to utilize his gift of God with power (1:6-7), to suffer with Paul for the sake of the Gospel (v.8), to guard the faith (v.14), to handle the word of truth correctly (2:15), to flee evil desires (v.22), to stay true to the faith (3:14-16), and to preach the Word (4:2).
