C. Genealogy of David (4:18-22)

The closing genealogy has been commonly called a later addition. Though it bears the marks of an appendix, this does not necessarily mean it is secondary. Indeed, it appears to form a closure (along with the birth of Obed) and thus forms an important literary unit in the book (see introduction and Berlin, 107-10).
