a. Joash comes to power (22:10-23:21)

Athaliah puts the Davidic dynasty on the brink of extinction. However, for the six years that this illegitimate ruler sat on the throne of Judah, Jehosheba and Jehoiada hide baby Joash in the temple.

Finally, Jehoiada initiates a pact with the military commanders, the Levites, and the family heads to place Joash on his promised throne. The priests and Levites lead a popularly supported holy revolution. They crown Joash and slay Athaliah and her followers. The people vow to serve God, and, as a result, they tear down the Baal temple and care for the Lord’s neglected temple.
