Name Meaning—Sick

Many names in the various lists of pedigrees found in the Old Testament are derived from the sorrows, dangers, and other circumstances of the natal hour. Mahli, meaning “sick,” and Mahlal, “sickness,” are understood to allude to the precarious state of the mother at the time of birth. Mahalath has a similar meaning, so has Helah who was one of the wives of Ashur, the posthumous son of Hazon, and the father of Tekoa. Ashur was the head of a family of the tribe of Judah, and Helah bore him three sons, Zereth, Jezoar and Ethnan.
