Penuel, Peniel [Pēnū'el,Pēnī'el]—the face of god.

  1. A man of Judah and the ancestor of the inhabitants of Gedor (1 Chron. 4:4).
  2. A Benjamite of the family of Shashak (1 Chron. 8:25). Also the name of an encampment east of Jordan where Jacob wrestled with the angelic visitor (Gen. 32:30, 31; Judg. 8:8, 9, 17).
