Elah, Ela

Elah, Ela [Ē'lah]—an oak or like a tree.

  1. A duke of Edom, named from his habitation (Gen. 36:41; 1 Chron. 1:52).
  2. The father of one of Solomon’s purveyors (1 Kings 4:18).
  3. The son and successor of Baasha, king of Israel, who only reigned for about a year and who was killed while drunk by Zimri (1 Kings 16:6-14).
  4. The father of Hoshea, last king of Israel (2 Kings 15:30; 17:1; 18:1, 9.)
  5. A son of Caleb, son of Jephunneh (1 Chron. 4:15).
  6. One of the tribe, a Benjamite (1 Chron. 9:8). Also the name of the valley where David slew Goliath (1 Sam. 17:2, 19).
