Isaiah 2:1-5

Words that cause us to hope in God

This is the message that appeared to Amoz's son, Isaiah, about Judah and Jerusalem.

This is what will happen in the last days. The mountain where the Lord's temple is will continue to be there. It will be the most important mountain of all. It will be higher than all the hills around it. People from every nation will go there all the time.

As they come, people from many nations will say, ‘Come! We will go to the mountain of the Lord, Jacob's God. We will go to worship him at his temple. Then he will teach us how to live in a way that pleases him. We will be able to walk in his paths.’

At that time, Zion will be the place where people learn about what is right. Yes, in Jerusalem the Lord will teach people his message.[a]

God will be the judge between different nations. When they argue together, he will say who is right. They will take their swords and they will make them into ploughs. Their spears will become knives to cut their vines. Nations will no longer need weapons to attack other nations. They will not prepare to fight wars any more.

Jacob's family, come now! We need to live in the light that the Lord gives to us.[b]

Psalm 122

A song to sing as we climb.

David wrote this song.

122 It made me very happy when people said to me,
‘We will go to the house of the Lord.’[a]
Now we have arrived!
We are standing inside your gates, Jerusalem!
Jerusalem is a strong city where many people can meet together.
Israel's tribes who belong to the Lord go up there.[b]
They go there to thank the Lord,
    as he has commanded them.
Israel's leaders sit there to judge the people.
They sit on the thrones of King David's descendants.
Pray that there will be peace in Jerusalem.
Pray that people who love Jerusalem will be safe.
Yes, I pray that there will be peace inside the city's walls.
I pray people will be safe in their strong houses.
Because of my family and my friends I will pray,
‘Please let there be peace in Jerusalem.’
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will pray for good things to happen in Jerusalem.

Romans 13:11-14

11 Live in that way, because you know what is happening in this time now. It is time that you should stop sleeping. It is now time to wake up. The time when God will save us completely is near. That time is nearer now than when we first believed in him. 12 The night has nearly finished and the day is almost here. So we must stop doing the bad things that belong to the dark. Instead, we must take weapons like soldiers who are ready to fight in the light.[a]

13 We should live in a good way, because we live in the light of day. We should not go to wild parties. We must not be drunks. We must not have sex with anyone who is not our own wife or husband. We must not do wrong things with our bodies. We must not quarrel. We must not be jealous of other people. 14 Instead, you must live with the Lord Jesus Christ as your guide. Do not even think about the bad things that you may want to do to make yourself happy.

Matthew 24:36-44

Nobody will know when the Son of Man will return

36 Jesus then said, ‘Nobody knows the day or the hour when all these things will happen. Only God the Father knows when they will happen. The angels who are in heaven do not know. Even the Son does not know. 37 Remember what happened when Noah was alive.[a] It will be like that when the Son of Man returns to the earth. 38 In Noah's time, in the days before the flood, people were eating their meals every day. Men married women and women married men. They continued to do all these things until the day that Noah went into his big boat. 39 The people did not know what would happen. Then rain fell for a long time and all these people died in the deep water. When the Son of Man returns, it will happen quickly in the same way. 40 At that time, it will be like this: Two men will be working in a field. God will take one man away, but he will leave the other man behind. 41 Two women will be preparing food together in the same place. God will take one of them away, but he will leave the other woman behind.

42 So you must watch carefully! You do not know the day when your Master will come back. 43 You can be sure about this. The master of a house does not know at what time of night a man would come to rob him. If he knew the time, he would watch his house more carefully. He would not let the robber come into his house and take away his things. 44 So you must also be ready. The Son of Man will come at a time when you are not thinking about it.’
