Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Longing for Zion in a Foreign Land
137 By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down, yea, we wept
When we remembered Zion.
2 We hung our harps
Upon the willows in the midst of it.
3 For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song,
And those who (A)plundered us requested mirth,
Saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How shall we sing the Lord’s song
In a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget its skill!
6 If I do not remember you,
Let my (B)tongue cling to the roof of my mouth—
If I do not exalt Jerusalem
Above my chief joy.
13 How shall I (A)console[a] you?
To what shall I liken you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
What shall I compare with you, that I may comfort you,
O virgin daughter of Zion?
For your ruin is spread wide as the sea;
Who can heal you?
14 Your (B)prophets have seen for you
False and deceptive visions;
They have not (C)uncovered your iniquity,
To bring back your captives,
But have envisioned for you false (D)prophecies and delusions.
15 All who [b]pass by (E)clap their hands at you;
They hiss (F)and shake their heads
At the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that is called
(G)‘The perfection of beauty,
The joy of the whole earth’?”
16 (H)All your enemies have opened their mouth against you;
They hiss and gnash their teeth.
They say, (I)“We have swallowed her up!
Surely this is the (J)day we have waited for;
We have found it, (K)we have seen it!”
17 The Lord has done what He (L)purposed;
He has fulfilled His word
Which He commanded in days of old.
He has thrown down and has not pitied,
And He has caused an enemy to (M)rejoice over you;
He has exalted the [c]horn of your adversaries.
18 Their heart cried out to the Lord,
“O wall of the daughter of Zion,
(N)Let tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no relief;
Give [d]your eyes no rest.
19 “Arise, (O)cry out in the night,
At the beginning of the watches;
(P)Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord.
Lift your hands toward Him
For the life of your young children,
Who faint from hunger (Q)at the head of every street.”
20 “See, O Lord, and consider!
To whom have You done this?
(R)Should the women eat their offspring,
The children [e]they have cuddled?
Should the priest and prophet be slain
In the sanctuary of the Lord?
Obedience by Faith
5 Whoever believes that (A)Jesus is the Christ is (B)born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and (C)keep His commandments. 3 (D)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And (E)His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For (F)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that (G)has overcome the world—[a]our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but (H)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, [a]and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Confidence and Compassion in Prayer
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that (A)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and (B)He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. (C)There is sin leading to death. (D)I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 (E)All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
Knowing the True—Rejecting the False
18 We know that (F)whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God (G)keeps[b] [c]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are of God, and (H)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
20 And we know that the (I)Son of God has come and (J)has given us an understanding, (K)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. (L)This is the true God (M)and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
