Version
Psalm 81:1

God’s Goodness and Israel’s Waywardness.

For the music director; [a]on the Gittith. A Psalm of Asaph.

81 (A)Sing for joy to God our (B)strength;
Shout (C)joyfully to the (D)God of Jacob.

Psalm 81:10-16

10 (A)I, the Lord, am your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
(B)Open your mouth wide and I will (C)fill it.

11 “But My people (D)did not listen to My voice,
And Israel did not [a]obey Me.
12 So I (E)gave [b]them over to the stubbornness of their heart,
To walk by their own plans.
13 Oh that My people (F)would listen to Me,
That Israel would (G)walk in My ways!
14 I would quickly (H)subdue their enemies
And (I)turn My hand against their adversaries.
15 (J)Those who hate the Lord would (K)pretend to obey Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.
16 [c]But I would feed you with the [d](L)finest of the wheat,
And with (M)honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

Jeremiah 2:1-3

Judah’s Apostasy

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Go and (A)proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, ‘This is what the Lord says:

“I remember regarding you the [a](B)devotion of your youth,
Your love when you were a bride,
(C)Your following after Me in the wilderness,
Through a land not sown.
Israel was (D)holy to the Lord,
The (E)first of His harvest.
(F)All who ate of it became guilty;
Evil came upon them,” declares the Lord.’”

Jeremiah 2:14-22

14 “Is Israel (A)a slave? Or is he a servant born in the home?
Why has he become plunder?
15 The young (B)lions have roared at him,
They have [a]roared loudly.
And they have (C)made his land a waste;
His cities have been destroyed, without inhabitant.
16 Also the [b]men of (D)Memphis and Tahpanhes
Have [c]shaved (E)your head.
17 Have you not (F)done this to yourself
By your abandoning the Lord your God
When He (G)led you in the way?
18 But now what are you doing (H)on the road to Egypt,
Except to drink the waters of the [d](I)Nile?
Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria,
Except to drink the waters of the Euphrates River?
19 (J)Your own wickedness will correct you,
And your (K)apostasies will punish you;
Know therefore and see that it is evil and (L)bitter
For you to abandon the Lord your God,
And (M)the fear of Me is not in you,” declares the Lord [e]God of armies.

20 “For long ago [f](N)I broke your yoke
And tore off your restraints;
But you said, ‘I will not serve!’
For on every (O)high hill
And under every leafy tree
You have lain down as a prostitute.
21 Yet I (P)planted you as a choice vine,
A completely faithful seed.
How then have you turned yourself before Me
Into the (Q)degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?
22 Although you (R)wash yourself with lye
And [g]use much soap,
The (S)stain of your guilt is before Me,” declares the Lord [h]God.

Matthew 20:20-28

Request for Preferred Treatment

20 (A)Then the mother of (B)the [a]sons of Zebedee came to [b]Jesus with her sons, (C)bowing down and making a request of Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you desire?” She *said to Him, “Say that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine (D)shall sit, one at Your right, and one at Your left.” 22 But Jesus replied, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (E)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He *said to them, (F)My cup you shall drink; but to sit at My right and at My left is not Mine to give, (G)but it is for those for whom it has been (H)prepared by My Father.”

24 And after hearing this, the other ten disciples became indignant with the two brothers. 25 (I)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and [c]those in high position exercise authority over them. 26 It [d]is not this way among you, (J)but whoever wants to become [e]prominent among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as (K)the Son of Man (L)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [f]life as a ransom for many.”
