Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Grieving over Defeat in Battle, and Prayer for Help.
For the music director; according to [a]Shushan Eduth. A [b]Mikhtam of David, to teach; [c]when he fought with Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and killed twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.
60 God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; (D)restore us!
2 You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its cracks, for it sways.
3 You have [f](G)made Your people experience hardship;
You have given us [g]wine to (H)drink that makes us stagger.
4 You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah
5 (J)That Your (K)beloved may be rescued,
(L)Save us with Your right hand, and answer [h]us!
6 God has spoken in His [i](M)holiness:
“I will triumph, I will divide up (N)Shechem, and measure out the Valley of (O)Succoth.
7 (P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [j]helmet of My head;
Judah is My (R)scepter.
8 (S)Moab is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over (T)Edom;
Shout loud, (U)Philistia, because of Me!”
9 Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who [k]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself not (V)rejected us, God?
And (W)will You not go out with our armies, God?
11 Oh give us help against the enemy,
For (X)rescue [l]by man is worthless.
12 [m]Through God we will (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)trample down our enemies.
12 [a]Ephraim surrounds Me with (A)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
[b]Judah is still unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
Ephraim Reminded
12 [c]Ephraim feeds on (B)wind,
And pursues the (C)east wind continually;
He multiplies lies and violence.
Moreover, [d]he makes a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is brought to Egypt.
2 The Lord also has a (D)case against Judah,
And will punish Jacob (E)according to his ways;
He will repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he (F)took his brother by the heel,
And in his mature strength he (G)contended with God.
4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (H)implored His favor.
He found Him at (I)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
5 And the Lord, the God of armies,
The Lord is His [e](J)name.
6 So as for you, (K)return to your God,
(L)Maintain [f]kindness and justice,
And (M)wait for your God continually.
7 A [g]merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent (N)balances,
Loves to exploit.
8 And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become (O)rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(P)No wrongdoing, which would be sin.”
9 But I have been the Lord your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (Q)live in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 I have also spoken to the (R)prophets,
And I [h]provided many visions,
And through the prophets I spoke in (S)parables.
11 Is there injustice in Gilead?
Certainly they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
Yes, (T)their altars are like stone heaps
Beside the furrows of a field.
12 Now (U)Jacob fled to the [i]land of Aram,
And (V)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (W)prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was protected.
14 (X)Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (Y)guilt for bloodshed on him
And bring his (Z)disgrace back to him.
Family Relations
18 (A)Wives, (B)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 (C)Husbands, love your wives and do not become bitter against them. 20 (D)Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing [a]to the Lord. 21 (E)Fathers, do not [b]antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.
22 [c](F)Slaves, obey those who are your [d]human masters in everything, (G)not with [e]eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work [f]heartily, (H)as for the Lord and not for people, 24 (I)knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward [g]of (J)the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you (K)serve. 25 For (L)the one who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and [h](M)that without partiality.
4 Masters, grant your slaves justice and fairness, (N)knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
