Version
Psalm 52

This is a special song that David wrote for the music leader.

It was when Doeg, the man from Edom, went to Saul and told him, ‘David went to the house of Ahimelech, the priest.’

Cruel words[a]

52 Strong man, why are you so proud
about the evil things that you like to do?
Remember that God's faithful love keeps me safe.
Your tongue is like a sharp knife!
You talk about how to hurt other people,
    You speak nothing but lies.
You love to do evil things,
    not good things.
You love to tell lies
    more than the truth.
Selah.
You love to say cruel words.
    You speak to deceive others.
But God will knock you down,
and he will break you into pieces.
He will take you away from your home.
He will remove you from this world where people live.
Selah.
Righteous people will see what has happened,
    and they will be afraid.[b]
Then they will laugh at the wicked person,
    and they will say,
‘Look! This man did not trust God to keep him safe.
Instead, he trusted in his riches.
He thought that he could be cruel,
and that would keep him safe.’
But I am like a strong olive tree
that grows in the house of God.
I will always trust in God's faithful love for his people.
I will always praise you, God,
    for what you have done.
I will trust you to help me,
together with all those who serve you.

Amos 5:10-17

10 ‘You Israelites hate honest judges. You laugh at anyone who speaks the truth. 11 You cheat poor people so that they pay too much tax. You take away their food for yourselves. Because of that, you will not live in the beautiful houses that you have built for yourselves. You will not drink wine from the vines that you have planted.

12 I, the Lord, know all the wrong things that you have done. They are very many and they are very bad. You are cruel to good people. You take bribes to tell lies. Sometimes a person gives money to you to make you tell lies. As a result, poor people do not receive justice. 13 This is such an evil time that clever people say nothing. That is how they keep themselves safe.’

14 You say that the Lord God Almighty is with you. Stop doing evil things. Do good things, so that you will live. Then the Lord God Almighty will really be with you, as you say. 15 Hate evil things and love good things. When you judge people, be fair and honest. Then maybe the Lord God Almighty will be kind to those of his people who still remain, Joseph's descendants.

16 The Lord, the Lord God Almighty says, ‘All the people will be sad. They will weep and cry loudly in all the streets. They will tell the farmers to weep with them. They will tell the singers to sing sad songs for them. 17 In every field and garden, people will be weeping, because I will come to punish them all.’ That is what the Lord says.

Hebrews 5:1-6

Every leader of God's priests comes from among the people. That special priest's work is to serve God on behalf of God's people. He offers gifts and sacrifices to God, so that God will forgive the people's sins. That priest himself may often do wrong things, because he is weak and human. As a result, he understands other people who make mistakes. He can be kind to people who do wrong things. But, because he himself does wrong things, he must offer sacrifices to God on behalf of himself, as well as on behalf of the people.

Nobody decides for himself to become a leader of the priests. God himself must choose him. That is how Aaron became a priest.[a]

It is the same with Christ. He did not choose himself to be God's special priest. He did not choose to make himself important like that. God chose him. God showed that Christ was very important. God said to him:

‘You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.’[b]

And in another place in the Bible God says this:

‘You will be a priest for ever,
in the same way that Melchizedek was a priest long ago.’[c]
