Amos 7:7-17

Third Vision: A Plumb Line

He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand. The Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” (A)

I replied, “A plumb line.”

Then the Lord said, “I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel;(B) I will no longer spare them:(C)

Isaac’s high places(D) will be deserted,
and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins;(E)
I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam
with a sword.”

Amaziah’s Opposition

10 Amaziah the priest(F) of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you(G) right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words, 11 for Amos has said this: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go into exile from its homeland.’”(H)

12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer!(I) Flee to the land of Judah. Earn your living[a] and give your prophecies there, 13 but don’t ever prophesy(J) at Bethel again, for it is the king’s sanctuary(K) and a royal temple.”

14 So Amos answered Amaziah, “I was[b] not a prophet or the son of a prophet;[c](L) rather, I was[d] a herdsman,(M) and I took care of sycamore figs. 15 But the Lord took me from following the flock(N) and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’”(O)

16 Now hear the word of the Lord. You say:

Do not prophesy(P) against Israel;
do not preach(Q) against the house of Isaac.

17 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:

Your wife will be a prostitute in the city,(R)
your sons and daughters will fall by the sword,(S)
and your land will be divided up
with a measuring line.
You yourself will die on pagan[e] soil,(T)
and Israel will certainly go into exile(U)
from its homeland.

Psalm 82

Psalm 82

A Plea for Righteous Judgment

A psalm of Asaph.(A)

God stands in the divine assembly;
he pronounces judgment among the gods:[a](B)
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(C)Selah
Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(D)
Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked.”(E)

They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(F)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(G)

I said, “You are gods;(H)
you are all sons of the Most High.(I)
However, you will die like humans
and fall like any other ruler.”(J)

Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to you.(K)

Colossians 1:1-14

Greeting

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will,(A) and Timothy(B) our brother:

To the saints in Christ at Colossae, who are faithful brothers and sisters.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.[a]

Thanksgiving

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. You have already heard about this hope in the word of truth,(C) the gospel that has come to you. It is bearing fruit(D) and growing all over the world,(E) just as it has among you since the day you heard it and came to truly appreciate(F) God’s grace.[b](G) You learned this from Epaphras,(H) our dearly loved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ(I) on your[c] behalf, and he has told us about your love in the Spirit.(J)

Prayer for Spiritual Growth

For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking(K) that you may be filled with the knowledge(L) of his will(M) in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,[d] 10 so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work(N) and growing in the knowledge of God,(O) 11 being strengthened(P) with all power,(Q) according to his glorious(R) might, so that you may have great endurance and patience, joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you[e] to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.(S) 13 He has rescued(T) us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom(U) of the Son(V) he loves.(W) 14 In him we have redemption,[f] the forgiveness of sins.

Luke 10:25-37

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 Then(A) an expert in the law(B) stood up to test(C) him, saying, “Teacher,(D) what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (E)

26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God(F) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,”(G) and “your neighbor as yourself.”[a](H)

28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”(I)

29 But wanting to justify himself,(J) he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (K)

30 Jesus took up the question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan(L) on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.(M) 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil(N) and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day[b] he took out two denarii,[c] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’

36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”

37 “The one who showed mercy(O) to him,” he said.

Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”
