Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Unjust Judgments Rebuked.
A Psalm of Asaph.
82 God takes His (A)position in [a]His assembly;
He (B)judges in the midst of the (C)gods.
2 How long will you (D)judge unjustly
And (E)show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 (F)Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
4 (G)Rescue the weak and needy;
Save them from the hand of the wicked.
5 They (H)do not know nor do they understand;
They (I)walk around in darkness;
All the (J)foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 [b]I (K)said, “You are gods,
And all of you are (L)sons of the Most High.
7 Nevertheless (M)you will die like men,
And fall like (N)one of the princes.”
8 (O)Arise, God, (P)judge the earth!
For You (Q)possess all the nations.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
And you commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You (A)shall not prophesy!’
13 Behold, I am (B)making a rut in the ground beneath you,
Just as a wagon makes a rut when filled with sheaves.
14 (C)Refuge will be lost from the swift,
And the strong will not strengthen his power,
Nor the (D)warrior save his [a]life.
15 The one who (E)grasps the bow will not stand his ground,
The swift of foot will not escape,
Nor will the one who rides the (F)horse save his [b]life.
16 Even the [c]bravest among the warriors will (G)flee naked on that day,” declares the Lord.
All the Tribes Are Guilty
3 Hear this word which the Lord has spoken against you, sons of Israel, against the entire [d](H)family which [e]He brought up from the land of Egypt:
2 “(I)You only have I [f]known among all the families of the earth;
Therefore I will [g](J)punish you for all your wrongdoing.”
3 Do two people walk together unless they have agreed to meet?
4 Does a (K)lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?
Does a young lion [h]growl from his den unless he has captured something?
5 Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no [i]device in it?
Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
6 If a (L)trumpet is blown in a city, will the people not tremble?
If a (M)disaster occurs in a city, has the Lord not brought it about?
7 [j]Certainly the Lord [k]God does nothing
Unless He (N)reveals His secret plan
To His servants the prophets.
8 A (O)lion has roared! Who will not fear?
The (P)Lord God has spoken! (Q)Who can do anything but prophesy?
16 “For God so (A)loved the world, that He (B)gave His (C)only Son, so that everyone who (D)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God (E)did not send the Son into the world (F)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him. 18 (G)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of (H)the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that (I)the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for (J)their deeds were evil. 20 (K)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. 21 But the one who (L)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed [a]as having been performed in God.”
