Version
Psalm 75

Psalm 75[a]

For the music director, according to the al-tashcheth style;[b] a psalm of Asaph, a song.

75 We give thanks to you, O God. We give thanks.
You reveal your presence;[c]
people tell about your amazing deeds.
God says,[d]
“At the appointed times,[e]
I judge[f] fairly.
When the earth and all its inhabitants dissolve in fear,[g]
I make its pillars secure.”[h] (Selah)
[i] I say to the proud, “Do not be proud,”
and to the wicked, “Do not be so confident of victory.[j]
Do not be so certain you have won.[k]
Do not speak with your head held so high.[l]
For victory does not come from the east or west,
or from the wilderness.[m]
For God is the judge.[n]
He brings one down and exalts another.[o]
For the Lord holds in his hand a cup
full of foaming wine mixed with spices,[p]
and pours it out.[q]
Surely all the wicked of the earth
will slurp it up and drink it to its very last drop.”[r]
As for me, I will continually tell what you have done;[s]
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 God says,[t]
“I will bring down all the power of the wicked;
the godly will be victorious.”[u]

2 Kings 4:1-7

Elisha Helps a Widow and Her Sons

Now a wife of one of the prophets[a] appealed[b] to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord.[c] Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.” Elisha said to her, “What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house except a small jar of olive oil.” He said, “Go and ask all your neighbors for empty containers.[d] Get as many as you can.[e] Go and close the door behind you and your sons. Pour the olive oil into all the containers;[f] set aside each one when you have filled it.” So she left him and closed the door behind her and her sons. As they were bringing the containers to her, she was pouring the olive oil. When the containers were full, she said to one of her sons,[g] “Bring me another container.” But he answered her, “There are no more.” Then the olive oil stopped flowing. She went and told the prophet.[h] He said, “Go, sell the olive oil. Repay your creditor, and then you and your sons can live off the rest of the profit.”

Matthew 10:16-25

Persecution of Disciples

16 “I[a] am sending you out like sheep surrounded by wolves,[b] so be wise as serpents[c] and innocent as doves.[d] 17 Beware[e] of people, because they will hand you over to councils[f] and flog[g] you in their synagogues.[h] 18 And you will be brought before governors and kings[i] because of me, as a witness to them and to the Gentiles. 19 Whenever[j] they hand you over for trial,[k] do not worry about how to speak or what to say,[l] for what you should say will be given to you at that time.[m] 20 For it is not you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

21 “Brother[n] will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against[o] parents and have them put to death. 22 And you will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved! 23 Whenever[p] they persecute you in one town,[q] flee to another! I tell you the truth,[r] you will not finish going through all the towns[s] of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor a slave[t] greater than his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much worse will they call[u] the members of his household!
