59 1 David being in great danger of Saul, who sent to slay him in his bed, prayeth unto God, 3 Declaring his innocency, and their fury, 5 Desiring God to destroy all those that sin of malicious wickedness. 11 Whom though he keep alive for a time to exercise his people, yet in the end he will consume them in his wrath, 13 That he may be known to be the God of Jacob to the end of the world. 16 For this he singeth praises to God assured of his mercies.
To him that excelleth. Destroy not. A Psalm of David, on [a]Michtam. (A)When Saul sent and they did watch the house to kill him.
1 O my God, [b]deliver me from mine enemies; defend me from them that rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the wicked doers, and save me from the bloody men.
3 For lo, they have laid wait for my soul; the mighty men are gathered against me, not for mine [c]offense, nor for my sin, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves without a fault on my part: arise therefore to assist me, and behold.
5 Even thou, O Lord God of hosts, O God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen, and be not [d]merciful unto all that transgress maliciously. Selah.
6 They go to and fro in the evening: they bark like [e]dogs, and go about the city.
7 Behold, they [f]brag in their talk, and swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?
8 But thou, O Lord, shalt have them in derision, and thou shalt laugh at all the heathen.
9 [g]He is strong: but I will wait upon thee: for God is my defense.
10 My merciful God will [h]prevent me: God will let me see my desire upon mine enemies.
11 Slay them [i]not, lest my people forget it: but scatter them abroad by thy power, and put them down, O Lord, our shield,
12 For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips: and let them be [j]taken in their pride, even for their perjury and lies, that they speak.
13 [k]Consume them in thy wrath: consume them that they be no more: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob, even unto the ends of the world. Selah.
14 And in the evening they [l]shall go to and fro, and bark like dogs, and go about the city.
15 They shall run here and there for meat, and surely they shall not be satisfied, though they tarry all night.
16 But I will sing of thy [m]power, and will praise thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.
17 Unto thee, O my [n]Strength will I sing: for God is my defense, and my merciful God.
14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram: (Now Joram kept Ramoth Gilead, he and all Israel, because of Hazael king of Aram.
15 And (A)king Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds, which the Aramites had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Aram) and Jehu said, If it be your minds, let no man depart and escape out of the city, to go and tell in Jezreel.
16 So Jehu got up into a chariot, and went to Jezreel: for Joram lay there, and [a]Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram.
17 And the watchman that stood in the tower in Jezreel spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Jehoram said, Take a horseman and send to meet them, that he may say, Is it peace?
18 So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the King, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? [b]turn behind me. And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
19 Then he sent out another on horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn behind me.
20 And the watchman told, saying, He came to them also, but cometh not again, and the marching is like the marching of Jehu the son of Nimshi: for he marcheth [c]furiously.
21 ¶ Then Jehoram said, Make ready: and his chariot was made ready. And Jehoram king of Israel, and Ahaziah king of Judah went out either of them in his chariot against Jehu, and met him in the field of Naboth the Jezreelite.
22 And when Jehoram saw Jehu, he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What [d]peace? whiles the whoredomes of thy mother Jezebel, and her witchcrafts are yet in great number?
23 Then Jehoram turned his hand, and fled, and said to Ahaziah, O Ahaziah, there is treason.
24 But Jehu took a bow in his hand, and smote Jehoram between the shoulders, that the arrow went through his heart: and he fell down in his chariot.
25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar a captain, Take, and cast him in some place of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for I remember that when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father, the Lord [e]laid this burden upon him.
26 (B)Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his [f]sons, said the Lord, and I will render it thee in this field, saith the Lord: now therefore take and cast him in the field according to the word of the Lord.
11 [a]Wherefore remember that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, and [b]called uncircumcision of them, which are [c]called circumcision in the flesh, made with hands,
12 That ye were, I say, at that time [d]without Christ, and were [e]aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and were (A)strangers from the covenants of promise, and had no hope, and were without God in the world.
13 [f]But now in Christ Jesus, ye which once were far off, are made near by the blood of Christ.
14 [g]For he is our peace, which hath made of both one, and hath broken the stop of the partition wall,
15 (B)In abrogating through his flesh the hatred, that is, the Law of commandments which standeth in ordinances, for to make of twain one new man in himself, so making peace,
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in [h]one body by his cross, and [i]slay hatred thereby,
17 [j]And came, and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were near.
18 For [k]through him we both have an entrance unto the Father by one Spirit.
19 [l]Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners: but citizens with the Saints, and of the household of God.
20 [m]And are built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the [n]chief cornerstone,
21 In whom all the building [o]coupled together, groweth unto an holy Temple in the Lord.
22 In whom ye also are built together to be the habitation of God by the Spirit.
